The Arab Science and Technology Foundation (ASTF)

The Arab Science and Technology Foundation is an independent, nongovernmental, non-profit regional and international organization. Scientists and researchers from inside and outside the Arab world as well as representatives of Arab and international science centers and organizations have contributed to its establishment. It is based in Sharjah, UAE, and is seeking to set up branches and links in those Arab and world capitals that have scientific entities willing to participate in its activities.

ASTF was founded upon a recommendation from the symposium on "Scientific Research Outlook in the Arab world and the New Millennium: Science and Technology" organized by the University of Sharjah during 24-26 April 2000 and attended by 375 scientists from inside and outside the Arab world. Its establishment was declared in the closing session of the Symposium upon the initiative of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al-Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the UAE, Ruler of Sharjah. Its board of directors and advisory board are composed of an elite cluster of renowned Arab scientists whose outstanding scientific achievements are well known on the national and international levels.

The Foundation aims to identify and support outstanding scientific research activities being conducted by women and men of science and technology from the Arab world. It also attempts to act as a mediator between those who produce, develop, finance or benefit from scientific research, while seeking to become a center for assessing the performance of scientific programs and also a powerful international Arab entity that defends the region's interests in scientific and technological progress.

The Arab Science and Technology Foundation represents the interests of an enormous group of people bound together by strong bonds of language, history and common traditions and inhabiting a continuous geographic area stretching from the northern coasts of Africa on the Atlantic and across the Eastern Mediterranean to the coasts of the Arabian Peninsula on the Arabian Gulf. Therefore, the Foundation reflects the aspirations of this group of people to reassume its historical role in enriching the worldwide enterprise of science. It also expresses the efforts of these people in developing national programs and projects capable of assimilating the scientific advances of the 21st century and interacting positively with the Western and Eastern experiences of scientific development.

Being the first organization to bring together scientists from inside and outside the Arab world with the aim of utilizing local and expatriate expertise in service to the Arab world and humanity in general, ASTF is, in fact, responding to the natural human feeling of wanting to be close to one's roots, and fulfills the most cherished wish of expatriate scientists to compensate their motherland for part of the loss incurred by the "brain drain".

As such, ASTF aspires to be an influential Arab and international entity supporting the efforts of Arab scientists and researchers and defending the interests of the region in scientific and technological development, as well as protecting humanity from the likely negative effects and hazards of such developments.

Moreover, it seeks not only to strengthen the links between universities and research centers inside and outside the Arab world through joint projects, agreements and programs, but also to attract businesses, companies and individuals capable of allocating endowments to fund University research posts in those fields that are vital for the Arab countries.
